A Masterpiece of Female Rebellion 🎨

Before Valadon became a celebrated painter, she was a model in Montmartre, Paris, posing for the era's most celebrated artists, including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. But Valadon did something extraordinary: she taught herself to paint by observing the masters in their studios, sketchbook in hand. In 1894, she became the first female painter admitted to the prestigious Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, smashing through barriers that had kept women artists in the shadows of their male counterparts.

What makes her achievement even more remarkable? She did it whilst navigating motherhood and supporting her son Maurice Utrillo, himself a celebrated painter. Valadon refused to be confined by expectation, and her art reflects that defiance at every turn.

This masterwork epitomises Valadon's radical approach to depicting women. The painting presents a reclining figure draped across a bed, dressed in green-and-white striped pajamas and a coral camisole, smoking a cigarette with unmistakable self-possession. Two books rest nearby, signalling intellectual life and leisure. Her body is rendered without idealisation, her gaze thoughtful and directed outward, suggesting contemplation rather than display.
