The central figure is a matoi-mochi, a standard bearer from the "I-gumi" fire brigade, standing heroically calm before a raging Edo inferno. Fires were so devastatingly common in wooden Edo (old Tokyo) that they were poetically called "Flowers of Edo".

This brave firefighter, wearing his heavy water-soaked indigo coat and bearing his brigade's distinctive matoi banner, represents the daredevil spirit of Edo's legendary volunteer fire brigades. In Yoshitoshi's composition, the moon, typically the series' central motif, is almost entirely obscured by billowing smoke and flames, emphasising the all-consuming drama unfolding below. It's a poignant celebration of traditional heroism at a time when such figures were vanishing into history.

Yoshitoshi lived through extraordinary times, bridging Japan's feudal Edo period and the rapidly modernising Meiji era. Apprenticed under the legendary Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he witnessed the decline of traditional woodblock printing as photography and lithography took hold. Yet rather than surrender to obsolescence, Yoshitoshi revolutionised the medium by integrating Western techniques like chiaroscuro and linear perspective with traditional Japanese aesthetics. His later works, created despite struggles with mental illness, achieved a psychological depth and emotional intensity that transcended the explicit violence of his earlier career.
