The Poetry of Twisted Trunks 🖼️

Painted in November 1889 during Van Gogh's stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Olive Trees is part of a remarkable series of at least fourteen canvases. What makes this period extraordinary? Despite his profound mental health struggles, Van Gogh produced approximately 150 paintings during his year-long stay, including iconic works like The Starry Night. The ancient olive groves surrounding the asylum became his sanctuary, offering what he described as "comfort and strength" during his darkest moments.

Van Gogh saw profound beauty in these gnarled, resilient trees. In letters to his brother Theo, he wrote that the olive grove had "something very secret in it, and is immensely old", almost too beautiful to capture on canvas. The twisted forms represented endurance and survival, mirroring his own struggles whilst celebrating nature's extraordinary persistence.
