This particular painting captures a moment of autumnal melancholy, with its "subdued greens, grape blues, and soft violets" reflecting the shift in the seasons.

A lesser known fact about this painting is the clever technique Van Gogh employed to depict the rain. He used slanted lines at a different angle to the lines in the wheat field. This stylistic choice was directly inspired by his deep admiration for Japanese prints, a key influence on his work. He even mentioned the painting in two letters to his beloved brother, Theo, giving it the simple yet powerful title, La Pluie ('The Rain').
