The Man Who Heard Colour 🎨

Kandinsky wasn't simply gifted with a good eye. He had synaesthesia, a rare neurological condition that fused his senses together so that colours arrived with sound attached. Yellow, he wrote, rang out like a shrill trumpet fanfare, all brashness and forward motion. A deep blue, by contrast, settled into the room like the low, resonant hum of a cello. 🎻 This wasn't poetic flourish, it was how Kandinsky genuinely experienced the world, and it's precisely why this piece functions less like a picture and more like a musical score written in pigment.

Structurally, the work is deceptively simple: a 3x4 arrangement of squares, each holding a set of concentric rings orbiting inward. By stripping away any recognisable subject, no landscapes, no figures, nothing to "read", Kandinsky forced the eye to do something it rarely gets asked to do: look at colour purely as colour. Cool blues sit beside fiery oranges, deep reds frame acid greens, and the circles seem to hum, swell and recede depending entirely on their neighbours. It's colour theory as spectacle, decades before anyone coined the phrase "optical illusion" as a marketing term.

Kandinsky created this study in 1913 while working alongside Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), the Munich-based group pushing painting toward pure abstraction. It wasn't intended as a finished statement piece, but rather a private laboratory notebook, a place to test combinations of hue and form before scaling them up into his sprawling, ambitious "Compositions." Painted in watercolour, gouache and crayon on a modest sheet of paper (23.8 x 31.4 cm), it now lives at the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, a quiet, unassuming original for something that would go on to become one of the most reproduced abstract artworks in history.
