William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825–1905) would go on to become one of the most successful and highly paid painters in nineteenth century France, a pillar of the official Paris Salon system and later president of the Société des Artistes Français. He was also, notably, an early and consistent supporter of women's access to formal art education, teaching extensively at the progressive Académie Julian at a time when most academies barred women outright.

In 1850, however, Bouguereau was still an ambitious unknown, having twice failed to win the coveted Prix de Rome. Determined to force the judges and critics to finally take notice, he submitted Dante and Virgil to that year's Salon, a canvas engineered to showcase raw technical power rather than his usual serenity. It worked. Bouguereau secured the Prix de Rome shortly afterwards and never looked back, going on to exhibit hundreds of paintings across a prolific five decade career, even as his polished Academic style later fell dramatically out of critical favour with the rise of Impressionism, only to be rediscovered and reassessed by scholars and collectors generations later. Fittingly for a painting built on shock value, Dante and Virgil found an entirely new audience in the internet age, resurfacing as a viral meme nearly two centuries after it was painted, a strange but rather fitting afterlife for a work designed to grab attention.

The scene is drawn directly from Canto XXX of Dante's Inferno, set within the Eighth Circle of Hell, where falsifiers, fraudsters, and counterfeiters are eternally punished. At the centre of the composition, two condemned souls tear into one another with horrifying physical intensity: Gianni Schicchi, a Florentine knight damned for impersonating a dying man to steal his inheritance, sinks his teeth into the neck of Capocchio, an alchemist and heretic, while clawing viciously at his side.

Bouguereau renders every tendon, muscle, and strained nerve across Schicchi's back with obsessive anatomical precision, pushing his famed classical technique into something closer to horror than harmony. Behind the struggle, Dante himself, recognisable in his red robe and laurel wreath, recoils in visible terror and shields his face, while his steady guide Virgil looks on with cool, guarded restraint. Above them both, a winged demon hovers with an unsettling, satisfied smirk, presiding over the chaos, while a writhing mass of the damned burns in the smoky pit beyond. Sharp theatrical light rakes across the pale, straining bodies in the foreground, thrown into stark relief against the oppressive darkness of the underworld behind them, a masterclass in dramatic chiaroscuro.
