A Masterclass in Colour and Form 🏔️🎨
The "Blue Mountain" is not merely a landscape; it is an experience. Rohlfs takes the familiar silhouette of a peak and dissolves it into dynamic, wedge-shaped fields of colour. The result is a crystalline structure that seems to pulse with an upward energy, blending the sky and earth into a singular, monumental movement.
Rohlfs was a rebel with a very specific cause. Living in Munich between 1910 and 1912, he found himself at the heart of the Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) movement. It was during this period that he famously declared, "I do not paint according to nature." By rejecting direct naturalism, Rohlfs paved the way for the radical abstraction we adore today, prioritising the painterly process over three-dimensional accuracy.
The story of Christian Rohlfs is as compelling as his brushwork. A true late bloomer in the world of printmaking, he did not produce his first woodcut until the age of sixty. Despite this late start, he became one of the most significant representatives of German Expressionism.
His life was one of profound artistic integrity. He was the first artist to work at the legendary Museum Folkwang in Hagen, and he found deep inspiration in the works of Vincent van Gogh and Edvard Munch. However, his visionary style eventually put him at odds with the authorities. In 1937, the Nazi regime labelled his work as "degenerate" and removed it from public collections.
