A Masterclass in Line and Form  🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This captivating piece, originally published in Cadell's celebrated book of twenty lithographs, showcases the artist's exceptional draughtsmanship. The composition features three figures rendered in bold, confident strokes, with striking blue tones that demonstrate why Cadell earned his place amongst Scotland's most revered Colourists. The economy of line and sophisticated use of negative space reveal an artist at the height of his powers, creating wall art that feels both timelessly classic and refreshingly contemporary.

Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937) wasn't just any artist; he was the most elegant of the four Scottish Colourists, a group that revolutionised British art in the early 20th century. His journey began in Edinburgh, where his prodigious talent emerged early. By sixteen, he had decamped to Paris, enrolling at the prestigious Académie Julian and immersing himself in the vibrant French art scene that would shape his distinctive aesthetic.

What many don't know: Cadell was the only Scottish Colourist to serve in the First World War. After initially being deemed unfit, he determinedly gave up his beloved pipe, worked on a farm to build his fitness, and eventually joined the 9th Battalion, The Royal Scots in 1915. He served on the French front, was wounded twice, and received the General Service and Victory medals. Throughout this harrowing period, he maintained correspondence with fellow Colourist S.J. Peploe, and remarkably, his wartime drawings predicted the evolution of his later painting style.
