The composition floods the picture plane entirely with leaves and branches, leaving almost no sky, no ground, no escape from nature's quiet insistence. It is meditative, lush and quietly radical.

Created during the early Taishō period (1912 to 1926), a remarkably fertile era in Japanese cultural history when artists were boldly redefining what painting could be, New Leaves captures something that feels almost impossible to render: the very feeling of spring. The freshness of newly emerged leaves. That particular green that only exists for a few weeks each year before deepening into summer. Hayami saw it, felt it and committed it to paper with a sensitivity that remains startling more than a century later.

Gyoshū Hayami (1894 to 1935) was one of the most distinctive voices in Nihonga painting, a tradition rooted in Japanese artistic techniques developed across the Meiji Restoration through the Second World War. Unlike the oil painting techniques that dominated Western art, Nihonga artists worked with mineral pigments, animal-hide glue and handmade paper or silk, drawing on traditions of calligraphy and hand-painting stretching back centuries.
