A Masterpiece Born from Creative Tension 🎨

Created during the tumultuous summer of 1942, this painting represents Matisse's attempt to bridge two worlds: the spontaneous freedom of his line drawings and the carefully orchestrated colour fields of his oil paintings. In a letter to his son Pierre, an art dealer, Matisse confessed his struggle to achieve in painting the same directness he found in drawing. Seated Young Woman with an Amber Necklace was his answer to that creative challenge.

Working alla prima (in a single, uncorrected pass), he applied thinned pigments with loose, confident brushwork that mirrors the immediacy of drawing. The model's blonde curls are built up with yellow strokes blended into a green underlayer, creating a dynamic surface that practically vibrates against the black background.

Perhaps most striking is Matisse's innovative approach to the relationship between line and colour. The sitter's robe blazes with vibrant bars of red and yellow, whilst fine calligraphic strokes of black and cobalt violet describe the dress folds with almost pen-like precision. The swirling arabesques scratched into the black background, likely created with a brush handle or palette knife, transform what could have been a simple void into an active, luminous surface reminiscent of a linocut print.
