A self-taught visionary, Henri Rousseau painted a tranquil night that has entranced art lovers for generations. 🖼️

Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) was an artist like no other. A self-taught genius and a former customs officer he was famously known as "Le Douanier" (the customs officer). His work belongs to the Naïve Art movement a style characterised by its childlike simplicity and lack of formal training. Yet, his paintings possess a sophistication and depth that captivated artists and collectors alike. Picasso himself was a huge admirer of Rousseau's work.

A Carnival Evening, created between 1885 and 1886, is a perfect example of Rousseau’s unique vision. It’s an oil on canvas that captures an ethereal night scene. Under a luminous full moon two figures in carnival costumes stand in a sparse forest. The leafless trees reach up like skeletal fingers creating a beautiful and slightly eerie pattern against the deep blue sky.

The painting is full of fascinating details. The figure on the left is a Pierrot, a character from Italian commedia dell'arte, and the figure on the right is a Columbine.
