Originally titled "The White Horse," this 1909 canvas was painted at El Cabañal beach in Valencia, a location Sorolla returned to again and again during this prolific period. What makes the composition so striking is his use of a low, intimate viewpoint, set at the eye level of the young boy leading the horse. This clever device stretches the foreground dramatically and pushes the horizon into a slender strip at the top of the canvas, avoiding the glare of open sky and instead concentrating all of Sorolla's attention on the shoreline itself.
