Yet to know only this side of the artist is to miss half his genius. Hokusai was an acknowledged master of the grotesque, and his forays into supernatural imagery reveal an artist unafraid to explore the darker corners of human experience and Japanese folklore.

Born in 1760 in Edo (present-day Tokyo), Hokusai was remarkably prolific, producing an estimated 30,000 works during his lifetime. He changed his artistic name over 30 times throughout his career, each change marking a new phase in his creative evolution. Perhaps most fascinatingly, Hokusai believed he would only truly master his craft after the age of 100. He died at 89, reportedly lamenting that he needed just five more years to become a true artist.

This woodblock print, created around 1831 as part of Hokusai's celebrated Hyaku Monogatari (One Hundred Ghost Stories) series, depicts one of Japan's most chilling revenge narratives. Koheiji was a man betrayed and murdered by his own wife and her lover. In death, however, he found his power, returning as a vengeful spirit to haunt the guilty couple.
