Bald, unblinking, and wreathed in the cool theatre of chiaroscuro shadow, Beckmann stares out from the canvas with the composure of a man who has survived the unsurvivable, processed it, and decided to dress well anyway. 🖼️

Born in Leipzig in 1884, Max Beckmann is one of the defining figures of modern European art, a painter whose uncompromising figurative vision placed him at the charged intersection of German Expressionism and the harder-edged movement that would follow it: Neue Sachlichkeit, or New Objectivity. Unlike contemporaries who moved toward abstraction, Beckmann insisted that the human body, the human face, contained every spiritual and psychological truth worth painting. He was right.

He volunteered as a medical orderly during the First World War, and what he witnessed shattered him. A severe psychological breakdown in 1915 transformed his style permanently, from romantically academic to distorted, confrontational, and rawly honest. Trauma, it turned out, was also a teacher.

Beckmann fills the frame almost oppressively, wearing a heavy dark grey tailored suit, a high-collared shirt, and a deep red tie. His shaved head is almost sculptural, rounded and solid as a Roman bust. The lighting is ferociously dramatic: harsh illumination strikes one side of his face while the other falls into deep, muddy shadow. His features, the downturned mouth, the furrowed brow, are angular and blocky, echoing the woodcut prints he frequently produced alongside his paintings.
