A Masterpiece Steeped in Mystery 🎨
Also known by its Tahitian title Matamoe, this captivating work measures an impressive 115 cm × 86 cm in its original form and currently resides in Moscow's prestigious Pushkin Museum. But what makes this painting truly fascinating is the paradox at its heart: how can a scene so lush and alive bear the title "Death"?
Gauguin painted this enigmatic work during his first extended stay in Tahiti, having fled European civilisation in search of what he imagined as a more primitive, authentic existence. The composition is pure Gauguin – flattened perspective, saturated jewel tones, and symbolic imagery that bridges reality and myth. Two peacocks stroll serenely in the foreground whilst a figure with an upraised axe stands near a small fire, its white smoke curling into the tropical air. In the distance, two women linger by a hut beneath towering palms and verdant hills.
Born in Paris in 1848, Paul Gauguin lived a life as colourful as his canvases. Before becoming one of art history's most influential Post-Impressionists, he worked as a stockbroker and sailor, hardly the typical artistic pedigree! His childhood included time in Peru through his mother's family, experiences that perhaps planted the seeds for his later fascination with non-Western cultures.
