The Lost Archive of Andymania 🎨

In 1965, the ambitious photographer Steve Schapiro was commissioned by LIFE magazine to document the enigmatic artist. Although the story was never published, Schapiro's tireless work resulted in an extraordinary photographic archive, now unearthed and presented for the very first time. We see Warhol, with his trademark blonde wig and bland public persona, as he strategically transformed himself from a cult New York artist into a 20th-century icon.

236 pages 📖

Through Schapiro's lens, we witness the vibrant energy of The Factory, where Warhol and his superstars like Edie Sedgwick and Nico lived and worked. The book captures intimate moments of them hanging out at art openings, filming the underground movie "Camp," and creating the groundbreaking silkscreen art that would define an era.

One of the most captivating sections of the book documents Warhol's first museum retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia. The photos transport you back to that electrifying night, attended by thousands of fans, where "Andymania" was officially born. The book also follows Warhol on his West Coast journey to Los Angeles, where he exhibited his ironic "Silver Clouds" and filmed a performance by the legendary band, The Velvet Underground.

Dimensions: 24.13 x 3.18 x 34.29 cm 📕

This volume is more than just a photo book. Over 120 captivating photographs are juxtaposed with tipped-in plates of Warhol's original artworks from the period. These iconic art prints include "Colored Campbell’s Soup Can," "S&H Green Stamps," and the mesmerising "Flowers" series. An interesting fact about the "Flowers" series, featured in the book's images, is that the source image for these famous art prints was a photograph from the June 1964 issue of Modern Photography magazine. Warhol cropped the original photo of hibiscus blossoms to create his celebrated floral wall art.

Featuring an interview with Steve Schapiro himself, who sadly passed away in 2022, and an insightful essay by official Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik, this book is an indispensable resource for anyone interested in modern art, art history, and the vibrant cultural scene of the 1960s. It’s a definitive portrait of a groundbreaking artist at a transformative period in postwar American culture, a period that still influences contemporary art today. Don't miss your chance to own this magnificent piece of art history.
