The Roses That Refused to Be Forgotten 🖼️

Painted in a frenzy of creative urgency on the very eve of his departure from the Saint-Rémy asylum, this incandescent canvas captures something rare in art history: the moment a man fights his way back to himself, petal by passionate petal. 🎨

In May 1890, Van Gogh completed four extraordinary still lifes during his final three weeks at the asylum in Provence. Roses was conceived as part of a unified ensemble alongside two versions of Irises and a horizontal companion painting. The works share a luminous green palette, a sense of barely-contained vitality, and paint applied so thickly that both rose canvases had to be left behind when Van Gogh departed on 16th May 1890. He wrote to Theo reassuring him that "these canvases will take a whole month to dry, but the attendant here will undertake to send them off after my departure." They arrived in Auvers by 24th June.

"I have worked as in a frenzy. Great bunches of flowers, violet irises, big bouquets of roses..."
