A Masterpiece of Surrealist Symbolism 🦌🎨

Painted during one of the most challenging periods of Kahlo's life, The Wounded Deer presents the artist as a mystical creature, part human, part deer, pierced by nine arrows yet gazing forward with unflinching stoicism. The modest 22.4 x 30 centimetre original painting packs an extraordinary emotional punch, rendered in earthy greens, browns, and greys with strategic touches of blue and red.

The composition is rich with symbolism. Kahlo's hybrid form stands in a dense forest, nine trees flanking the wounded creature, with a broken branch prominently featured in the foreground. Through the trees, a body of water glimmers whilst a lightning bolt strikes from an otherwise bright sky, creating a tension between hope and despair. The word "carma" (karma) inscribed in the corner adds another layer of philosophical contemplation to this deeply personal work.

This artwork emerged during 1946, following a failed spinal surgery that left Kahlo in chronic pain. The nine arrows piercing the deer's body are thought to represent her physical suffering, whilst the deer itself references her pet fawn, Granizo. Despite the obvious trauma depicted, Kahlo's face maintains a calm, almost defiant expression, embodying her famous resilience.
