Flandrin, a French painter who won the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1832, created this study while fulfilling the requirements of his bursary in Rome. He sent the work back to Paris in 1837 where it immediately captivated contemporary French art critics. Its popularity has only grown since then with Napoleon III himself purchasing the painting in 1857.
The painting features an enigmatic youth sitting nude on a rock by the sea. His arms are wrapped around his legs, and his head is bowed, creating a beautifully rounded and introspective pose. The simplicity of the scene is what makes it so powerful. Is he a shipwreck survivor or a lost shepherd? The renowned critic Théophile Gautier pondered this, highlighting the painting's ability to spark the imagination. This quality has led to comparisons with Surrealist art of the twentieth century. The painting's mystery ensures that it will be a constant source of conversation.
