The Portrait With The World's Best Glasses 🎨

There are portraits, and then there is this portrait. 👀 Painted circa 1830 by the artist who would go on to found the Western Union Telegraph Company, Portrait of Nathaniel Olds has quietly become one of the most quietly subversive images in American fine art. Why? Because Nathaniel Olds is sitting there, in his impeccably formal black coat and white cravat, wearing what can only be described as the most fashion-forward tinted lenses in history.

Those green, segmented spectacles are not a surrealist intervention. They are not the work of a cheeky conservator, nor a mischievous digital edit gone viral. They are completely authentic. Olds wore tinted green lenses to protect his eyes from the fierce brightness of Argand whale-oil lamps, the cutting-edge indoor lighting of the early 19th century. The concern at the time was that such intense artificial light might cause lasting damage to the eyes. Olds, ever the pragmatist, simply wore his goggles to dinner.

🖼️ The man behind the canvas is equally compelling. Jeptha Homer Wade was not merely a gifted portrait painter; he was one of the great industrialists of 19th-century America. In 1854, he consolidated rival telegraph companies to found the Western Union Telegraph Company, a move that would make him one of the wealthiest men in Cleveland. His legacy extended well beyond commerce: his grandson, Jeptha Wade II, donated the parkland upon which the celebrated Cleveland Museum of Art was built in 1916, gifting it to the city as a Christmas present. The institution that now houses this very portrait owes its home, in no small part, to the family of the man who painted it.
