A Wearable Gallery 🇯🇵 🎨
Katsukawa Shunkō I (1743–1812) was no ordinary printmaker. A distinguished student of the celebrated Katsukawa Shunshō, Shunkō revolutionised Japanese printmaking with a groundbreaking innovation: the ōkubi-e, or large-head actor portraits. These intimate depictions focused on the expressive faces of Kabuki performers, capturing their theatrical personas with unprecedented detail and emotion. Working in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), he became synonymous with the dramatic intensity of ukiyo-e art.
The print adorning this tote captures Ichikawa Monnosuke II in a Shibaraku performance, one of the most iconic moments in Kabuki theatre. This powerful scene depicts the mie, a climactic pose designed to create a lasting impression on the audience. It's theatrical genius frozen in time, and now it's yours to carry.
