Een werkstaking: Strike of the Ballerinas (circa early 1900s) is van der Waay at his narrative best. The 60 × 100 cm oil on canvas depicts a tense moment backstage: a mass of ballerinas in luminous white tutus stand united on the left, their collective presence radiant yet defiant. On the right, an authoritative figure (likely a ballet master or impresario) confronts two dancers, one with hands defiantly on her hips, another seated and disengaged.
