A Vision of Cultured Leisure 🎨
Ramon Casas (1866-1932) was a towering figure of Catalan Modernisme, Spain's answer to Art Nouveau. Working alongside his close friend Miquel Utrillo, Casas co-created Pèl & Ploma between 1899 and 1903, producing some of the era's most striking visual culture. The magazine's title cleverly reflected their collaboration: Casas provided the drawings ("the hair," referencing paintbrushes) whilst Utrillo contributed the text ("the feather," evoking the writer's quill).
This particular poster was originally gifted to magazine subscribers and became such an instant sensation that it quickly sold out. Writer Miquel Utrillo famously described the young woman as a modern Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom and arts, whose "weapons are the brush of art and the pen of reason," with her glorious auburn hair forming "a helmet, crowned with a graceful crest."
