A Divine Masterpiece
William Blake, a brilliant English painter and poet, was an underappreciated genius in his own time. Today, he is celebrated as a pivotal figure in both visual arts and literature. His illustrations for Dante's Divine Comedy are considered the pinnacle of his artistic career and this print captures one of its most dramatic moments.
This particular watercolour, one of 102 works Blake created for the project, shows the giant Antaeus carefully lowering Dante and Virgil into the deepest circle of Hell. A fascinating fact about this artwork is that Blake produced these illustrations during a period of grave illness in his final years, yet his mastery and imagination shine through with incredible intensity. The National Gallery of Victoria holds a cherished collection of these works, and this particular piece is notable for being one of the most complete and finished.
